In the United States, the album was certified Gold a year after its release, and certified Platinum in 1991. The band shot a one-off promotional video in 1988 for the song "Speak" using performance footage. It did not include a dramatization of any of the story's concepts.

The song "I Don't Believe in Love" was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1990 in the category "Best Metal Performance".

During the tour promoting the 1990 album Empire, Operation: Mindcrime was performed in its entirety. The stage show featured video, animation and guest singer Pamela Moore as Sister Mary. A recording was released as Operation: Livecrime. The story was initially explored in a series of video clips for MTV in the 1989 VHS video, Video: Mindcrime.

In 2006, Operation: Mindcrime was re-released as a deluxe box set, containing the 2003 remaster, a live CD with the album played in its entirety at the Hammersmith Odeon on 15 November 1990, and a bonus DVD containing the 1989 Video: Mindcrime and bonus clips.

It had been a bit surprising to find out that Ryuji liked the same anime, but she was happy to have someone to talk theories with each time a new episode aired. It had been exciting when the movie was announced, and before, she would have just waited to buy it on dvd, since going to the theater meant being surrounded by people she didn't know and all kinds of crowds. But now, she'd have a bodyguard! It was a lot easier to face a crowd of strangers, especially the kind of people these events usually dragged out, with a friend.

Even so, it was bound to be a madhouse. Not only was the local theater showing the movie, but they were really going all out. Each theater was putting out limited edition merchandise. Tote bags, figures, drama cds, special art booklets! Things that would cost an arm and a leg if you missed getting them at the event! There was absolutely no way she was gonna miss out on this opportunity, anxiety be damned. At least she was going to have someone to hide behind. And Ryuji stood a better chance at fighting for merch if it came down to it...which she was almost certain would happen.

Well, maybe she could have invited him differently--but she couldn't hold back her excitement as soon as she'd heard about the event the theater was putting on. Of course, she knew he'd probably be free, or already planning to go himself, so it was only natural that he'd have the time!

And that was why she was currently standing outside the theater, rocking on her heels as she clutched her phone, thumbs furiously typing away as she waited.

Maybe that's blind faith in a franchise, but when he's been following the series for this long? It's hard not to trust it without thought. He's almost never seen something this good that didn't come from some ridiculously rich corporation. Indies like this reaching fame? It rocked his mind. [break][break] There was no doubt the first though they'd have to find and take was the CDs. They're always the most important thing to get from an event like this. Most of the time its just a directors commentary, pretty boring stuff from his viewpoint, but there were the rare times where it ends up being extra bonus stories that never fit in the series at any other point. Those were worth more than gold to the fandom overall. After he'd have to check out the keychains, so likely the blonde would be dragging Futaba along to help spot the best made ones to add to the collection. The plans continued swirling around in his head as he got closer. Seeing the large sign atop the movie theater well before finding a crowd of fanboys and girls flooding the street.[break][break]
Ryuji felt his phone go off in his pocket, but he didn't have the time to check. Already behind schedule, he was hauling major ass trying to reach the theater before the gates of hell unleashed on the mortal coil. Thankfully, it wasn't much longer until he saw a head of orange hair and the body posture of someone who would rather be anywhere else. That's his Futaba alright. "Yo! Sorry! Mom needed me for a minute. And that minute turned into fifteen. You ready to head in?" He was sure the instinctive answer was no, but even if that came out as the verbal one they'd made a pact prior to this that any event where Futaba got cold feet, Ryuji would drag her inside and make sure she had fun.
